Johanna Drucker is the inaugural Martin and Bernard Breslauer Professor of Bibliographical Studies in UCLA’s Department of Information Studies. She has written and lectured widely on topics related to the history of the book, with special emphasis on artists’ books, typography, experimental poetry, and contemporary art. She is the author of eight published volumes of scholarly writing, including The Visible Word: Experimental Typography and Modern Art 1909-1923, which contains a section on Iliazd. Her most recent titles include Graphic Design History: A Critical Guide (with Emily McVarish), Sweet Dreams: Contemporary Art and Complicity, and SpecLab: Digital Aesthetics and Speculative Computing. In addition to her scholarly work, Drucker is known as a book artist and writer whose works often make use of experimental typography and her work is in museum and library collections worldwide. She has recently completed work on a manuscript titled, Diagramming Interpretation, and is working with research partners in London on design and creation of the online Museum of Writing.

The Art Forum Program at The David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies in collaboration with The Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts at Harvard University are proud to present About Academia, the latest project by renowned artist Antoni Muntadas. Muntadas represented Spain at the 2005 Venice Biennial and was the recipient of the Velázquez Visual Arts Prize in 2009—the most important distinction to be endowed on a visual artist by the Spanish state.
About Academia addresses the problematic relationship between the production of knowledge and economic power. Upon entering the gallery space, an installation consisting of three video projections confronts the viewer with some of the most pressing questions concerning the supposed objectivity of academic knowledge by pointing out the corporatization of institutions of higher learning in the United States and the sometimes controversial positions that universities fall into when trying to physically expand amidst disenfranchised communities, as well as falling into possible contradictions with the agendas of university donors.
Curated by José Falconi, About Academia was conceived and produced at the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies Harvard University over a period of three years. During that time, Muntadas not only researched the history of “academia” as an institution in the Western world –tracing its historical development from its inception in ancient Greece to its scholastic rebirth in medieval times, its re-foundation during the Enlightenment, its establishment in the New World, to its present challenges—but also interviewed a dozen renowned faculty members at Harvard, MIT and other research universities across the United States. Participants include Carol Becker, Noam Chomsky, John Coatsworth, Fernando Coronil, Thomas Cummins, Bradley Epps, David Harvey, Ute Meta Bauer, Doris Sommer, Mark Wigley, and Howard Zinn, among others.
At a moment in which the place of the humanities and the arts are coming under heavy attack within the United States, Muntadas’ project is in itself a poignant reminder of the powerful way in which art can be practiced as a critical tool and how it is important that it continue to be a major component of academia, nurtured and fostered within the university. This critical examination, taken with a combination of rigorous research and a boldness of visual display within the gallery, forms a piece that is as timely as it is urgent.

Born in Barcelona, Spain in 1942, Muntadas has lived and worked in New York since 1971. His work addresses social, political and communications issues, the relationship between public and private space within social frameworks, and the investigation of channels of information and the ways in which they may be used to censor central information or promulgate ideas. He works in a variety of media including photography, video, publications, Internet and multi-media installations.
His works have been exhibited throughout the world, including the Venice Biennial, Documenta Vl and X in Kassel, the Sao Paulo Biennial, the Whitney Biennial, the Lyon Biennial, the Havana Biennial, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Berkeley Art Museum in California, the Wexner Arts Center in Columbus, Ohio, le Musee d’Art Contemporain de Montreal, le Capc de Bordeaux, France, the Museu de Arte Moderna de Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, the Ludwig Museum in Budapest, Hungary and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, Spain. He studied at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Industriales in Barcelona and the Pratt Graphic Center in New York. He has taught and directed seminars at the University of California in San Diego, the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Bordeaux and Grenoble, the CAVS at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the San Francisco Art Institute, the Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts in Paris, the University of São Paulo in Brazil, Cooper Union in New York and many other institutions.
Muntadas has received several prizes and grants including those of the Guggenheim Foundation, the Rockefeller foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, Arts Electronica in Linz/Austria, Laser d’Or in Locarno, Switzerland and the Premi Nacional d’Arts Plastiques de la Generalitat de Catalunya.  He created works commissioned by the Centre Nacionale des Arts Plastiques in Paris, the Fonds d’Arts Publiques in Marseille, the Public Art Fund in New York, InSite 2005 in San Diego-Tijuana, and Istanbul 2010, and has been resident artist and consulting advisor in several research and education centers including the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, the Banff Center in Canada, Arteleku in San Sebastian, Spain and the University of Western Sydney in Australia.
Muntadas is currently Professor of the Practice at ACT/Department of Architecture at MIT and visiting professor at the IUAV in Venice, Italy.

Lugar, deseo, fotografía, cosa, huella, representación (tal vez, olvido)

En la segunda mitad del siglo XX dos instituciones se dividieron la tarea de ejecutar el tema de la memoria (y su contraparte, el olvido) que los campos de exterminio nazis pusieron tan masivamente sobre la mesa. Para hacerlo, ambas instituciones redefinieron su tenor en términos de la noción de no olvidar que algo ocurrió; pero, como sabemos, al hacerlo, terminaron generando, paradójicamente, el mismo producto en contra del cual manifiestamente se habían redefinido, el olvido, de tal forma que la misión manifiesta de no olvidar que algo ocurrió se transformó en ambas instituciones en su contraria, en olvidar que algo ocurrió–y el olvido se transformó, a su vez, en un producto de consumo más, insertado dentro de la lógica del capitalismo contemporáneo. Estas dos instituciones son el museo y el periodismo.

El museo actual es la continuación, por otros medios, de la idea tradicional, ptolomeica, del lugar de las musas. El museo es ante todo un lugar, un lugar de exhibición. No simplemente el lugar de exhibición de objetos hermosos (aquí entra la redefinición) sino el lugar de exhibición de objetos que ilustran una narrativa verbal consciente que intenta ordenar, explicar y fijar lo que ocurrió. En otras palabras, lo que ocurrió no fueron los objetos exhibidos, ni siquiera lo representado por ellos, sino lo expresado por una narrativa que, refiriéndose a algún pasado más o menos remoto, llega a nosotros. Esta narrativa es proyectiva, suele tener necesidad teleológica y se nos aparece como una conclusión deductiva: dado esto, esto. El objeto seleccionado deja de ser objeto y se convierte en pieza, como en la frase “pieza de museo”: un objeto que no es sólo el agregado estético cualitativo a una colección sino un elemento estructural de la narrativa, algo que encaja en ella y en ese sentido, más que bello, es importante. Por supuesto, la idea de que el museo refleja una cierta flecha imaginaria que surge remotamente y concluye en el tiempo presente es una ilusión y solamente se la entiende si se la invierte: la dirección de la flecha va hacia un pasado que es iluminado por una idea, por un deseo presente, de ser algo que (aún) no se es. Lo que el museo exhibe no es algo que ocurrió sino algo que el museo quiere que haya ocurrido. No está demás citar a Deleuze: si estás atrapado en el sueño del otro, te jodiste. En el caso del museo, el pasado ha caído atrapado en los sueños del presente. No hay nada más moldeable que el pasado. De ahí surge la figura perversa, finisecular, del curador: la figura tutelar que se encarga de darle dirección proyectiva a la empresa. En la mayoría de los casos, la narrativa resultante que pretende definir y fijar lo que ocurrió no es sino una justificación de la noción de estado/nación o de su encarnación ocasional.

La segunda institución, el periodismo, también es una institución dedicada manifiestamente a no olvidar que algo ocurrió. El mecanismo es distinto que el del museo pero es igualmente transparente: reemplazar al evento por la noticia, de tal forma que ahora lo que ocurre son las noticias; pero éstas, ya indistinguibles de los eventos, se nos presentan también como un flujo caótico incomprensible cuyo significado solamente se aprehende si se divide, selecciona, y domestica, emitiéndose. Una radio peruana (Radio Programas del Perú, RPP) ha llevado esta práctica al paroxismo y ostenta como lema publicitario el siguiente: “Las noticias siguen su curso imparable. Las tenemos aquí.” La moraleja que debemos extraer del lema no es tanto que las noticias son tomadas por una suerte de manada desbocada, algunos de cuyos miembros deben ser atrapados en el redil de lo informativo sino, más importante, la moraleja a extraer es que “las tenemos aquí”. En otras palabras, uno puede no saber donde está Putis (el lugar de una de las más célebres ejecuciones extrajudiciales del Perú en los 80s), pero ahora uno ya sabe donde está “Putis”. “Putis” (la noticia) está en RPP, lo que vuelve finalmente irrelevante donde esté Putis (el evento). En el Fedro de Platón hay ya una advertencia temprana de esto en boca del rey Thamus (247c y ss.). En consecuencia, el evento no sólo se transforma en noticia (con todo lo inevitable e ideológicamente selectivo que dicha transformación conlleva) sino que es desplazado, es sacado de lugar y puesto en otro: en un lugar mucho más efímero y que no deja huella. Pero este desplazamiento ejecuta una sustitución inmediata: ya no hay evento, ahora hay noticia. Y el carácter intrínseco de toda noticia es ser efímero. En otras palabras: el carácter intrínseco de la noticia es el poder ser reemplazada por otra y no dejar huella (el estar, literalmente, fuera de lugar). El lugar del periodismo es pues, como en el caso del museo, el lugar de un reemplazo.

De esta forma, las dos instituciones encargadas de no olvidar que algo ocurrió han terminado proponiendo, cada una a su manera, olvidar que algo ocurrió. Una, volviéndolo un deseo proyectivo; la otra, desplazándolo hacia un lugar apropiadamente efímero donde es reemplazado por otra cosa, una noticia. Es por esto que el tema de la memoria/olvido se ha hecho tan decisivo a fines del siglo pasado, porque bajo la misión manifiesta de no olvidar se esconde la voluntad tácita de no dejar huella. El museo y el periodismo son los dos grandes artífices de esta paradoja, las dos grandes máquinas de olvidar, los dos grandes agentes del ‘crimen perfecto’; no de aquél que queda impune porque nunca se atrapa a sus perpetradores (sabemos perfectamente bien quiénes son) sino, como dice Wajcman, de “aquél otro que queda impune porque nadie jamás sabrá que tuvo lugar” (El objeto del siglo, p20).

El dilema estético que surge inmediatamente post-Auschwitz (¿qué tipo de objeto, si alguno, merece crearse ante un irrepresentable?–que es la pregunta de Adorno) se expande para albergar ahora este otro: ¿qué tipo de objeto merece crearse, si alguno, en medio de esta aniquilación de la memoria a manos del museo y el periodismo? La respuesta es afirmativa (sí merece crearse) y es simple: un objeto que trate de olvidar que no ocurrió nada. Ya no el objeto que trata de recordar algo, porque eso termina siendo el lado peor de la nostalgia, sino el objeto que trabaja contra el olvido organizado. En contra del periodismo, dicho objeto reivindica la noción de lugar, de lugar no desplazado, no puesto en otro lugar y reemplazado. En contra del museo dicho objeto reivindica la noción de tiempo presente, del ahora no proyectivo, de la experiencia, en el sentido menos retórico del término.

Después de Auschwitz el objeto de arte es posible siempre y cuando no sea ni pieza de museo ni noticia.

En otra parte de Flavia Gandolfo es la ejecución estética y conceptual de este olvidar que no ocurrió nada. Como tal, es una crítica del olvidar que ocurrió algo, del olvido sistemático y masivo de parte del museo y el periodismo, y al mismo tiempo, es una crítica también del recordar algo como manifestación nostálgica. Lo único que importa recordar es no olvidar.

El trabajo de Gandolfo se abre ingresando al Museo Junín, una estructura circular y subterránea en el pueblo del mismo nombre en los Andes centrales del Perú. Las imágenes nos muestran el interior del museo pero, para nuestra sorpresa, el museo al que accedemos no exhibe las predecibles piezas de cualquier museo sino dibujos sin mérito, diplomas, fotografías descoloridas, una mesa, trofeos deportivos, una urna de vidrio con huacos y un fusil de juguete, un colchón arrumado contra una pared, una silla de madera, otra de plástico con frazadas sobre ella, un reloj, paredes vacías. La primera impresión es que nada de valor es exhibido aquí; la segunda, que los diversos objetos que cuelgan de las paredes o se posan sobre el suelo o descansan en la urna no corresponden a ninguna narrativa deliberada sino más bien a un abandono involuntario. La tercera impresión es la que finalmente capta Gandolfo con sus fotografías: que lo que el museo exhibe es el lugar del museo, lo que está en exhibición es su propio lugar. El museo ha sido retratado en su carácter más esencial: como lugar, como lugar en el momento previo al que se le coloquen las piezas domesticadas de nuestras más diversas proyecciones nacionales e ideológicas. Lo que se exhibe es un lugar vacío—y es precisamente el que no esté totalmente vacío sino más bien precariamente provisto de objetos ordinarios sin mayor valor el que efectivamente lo define como un espacio vacío. Lo que las imágenes de Gandolfo reclaman es la experiencia de ese lugar como lugar, como armazón vacío que puede soportar la artificialidad de cualquier narración. Una experiencia sin proyección temporal en ninguna dirección; más bien, y si fuera posible, una experiencia de la pared en blanco pero preparada para recibir cualquier demanda verbal, cualquier objeto vuelto pieza, cualquier proyección. Porque lo que la circularidad fotografiada del museo muestra con crudeza es justamente su falta de dirección, y por lo tanto, la ausencia de todo sentido. Esa experiencia del museo antes del museo es la que nos permite entender la violencia de toda narrativa y de toda exhibición propiamente. Estamos, entonces, en (o ante) un lugar que ha sido separado del resto para ser puramente lugar. Es esa excepcionalidad la que aparece retratada por Gandolfo. Todo museo debería tener un espacio así, una excepción, una sala de excepción, que permita entender en su vacío la violencia del museo como exhibición de piezas y narrativas.

La segunda parte del trabajo de Gandolfo repite el mismo tema, con variaciones, desde una crítica al periodismo. Esta vez, Gandolfo fotografía las páginas de un álbum de figuritas coleccionables de un diario peruano. La singularidad es que el álbum es retratado vacío; sólo asoman los recuadros donde han de pegarse los cromos, espacios apenas identificados por una numeración y vagamente ilustrados por una leyenda verbal. El álbum pretende ser un compendio de “Historia del Perú” y la actividad de pegar los cromos en los lugares pre-establecidos es tomada por el diario como “interactiva”. La perversidad del ejercicio es obvia. La historia se cumple, se perfecciona, se ejecuta, cuando la figurita y el espacio acordado para ella sobre la leyenda ilustrativa se juntan. Esta es la historia vuelta noticia: figurita y leyenda, la historia como conjunto de imágenes y frases coleccionables, ordenaditas en progresión numérica, listas para desplazarse unas a otras como noticias en el no-lugar de lo efímero.

Gandolfo ha fotografiado el álbum en el momento previo al que los lugares vacíos se vean rellenados con los cromos por los entusiastas escolares. Las imágenes son, nuevamente, las de un armazón vacío. El instante del acto fotográfico es similar al del Museo Junín porque aquí nuevamente se fotografía un espacio preparado, un espacio preparado-para. Y aquí, como en el Museo Junín, la verdadera vacuidad del espacio se logra mostrando un espacio no totalmente vacío, sino adornado por los escombros de un abandono, ya sea los objetos desordenados esparcidos sin voluntad en un caso, ya sea las banalidades retóricas de las leyendas verbales en el otro.

Por supuesto, este ejercicio institucional de borrar las huellas, de olvidar, solamente es posible con nuestra connivencia. Es contra la gran pasión por la ignorancia que habita en nosotros (y que es tan fuerte como nuestra gran pasión por el amor y la muerte) que el objeto de arte se alza y reclama. Está claro que no queremos saber. Está bien; entonces, nunca lo sabremos. En contra de las instituciones tutelares de nuestra ignorancia, el arte, si tiene alguna posibilidad de sobrevivir, no será como objeto ni como pieza ni como noticia, sino como la huella que deja cada vez que olvida que no ocurrió nada.

En otra parte de Flavia Gandolfo tiene el mérito doble de instalar una huella tal y de hacerlo con una nitidez y una claridad conceptual que no permiten ruta de escape. O cedemos a la voluntad de ignorancia no viendo lo que Gandolfo nos muestra o reconocemos la distorsión ideológica atávica que solamente una real obra de arte de nuestro tiempo como la suya nos permite reconocer.

An installation by Chiara Banfi

Fragility and concreteness are not opposed but rather are intertwined, complimentary features of remarkable buildings and the spaces that they enable. There might be no more definitive a marker of successful architectonic spaces than the sense of fragility in which the effective combination of its elements resides. Despite their concreteness, and often concealed by daily inhabitance and use, every successful architectural solution is itself a discrete, delicate magic of precise calculations. Exposing this precarious balance to the public, by way of revealing (i.e. enabling) the concomitant spaces teeming within each wall, is, for the viewer, the most disorienting aspect that artistic interventions into architectonic spaces produce.

But the exposure of the fragile concreteness of architectural spaces is itself a fragile, discrete movement. Its effectiveness should be assessed in terms of its capacity to prey upon and exploit the space without causing it to lose its functionality—if overplayed it can prove antithetical (i.e dysfunctional) to the building itself—and to produce defamiliarizing effects while molding itself to the requirements of daily life of the space’s dwellers.

In this site-specific project commissioned by the Latino and Latin American Art Forum in September 2005, Brazilian artist Chiara Banfi was asked to engage in dialogue with architect Harry Cobb’s latest creation, the CGIS buildings, in which DRCLAS is housed. Caminhos, the first of this two-part installation (the second one is exhibited at the Boston Arts Academy), is the result of this interaction.

By applying adhesive vinyl directly to otherwise sterile walls, Banfi infuses Cobb’s rectilinear spaces with the presence proper to living organisms. The almost biological forms that she lays over the bare surfaces of the rooms transform them into lively places without depriving them of their functionality. The ultimate effect of these remarkably fluid structures is as surprising as their formally ubiquitous display: by challenging their rectilinear environs, Banfi’s forms bestow the architectural structure’s sense of totality upon each interior space. Due to the forms’ implied departure from an “interior,” and the intervention in a solid, sturdy building with a design that resembles a spreading biological structure, the spectator is obliged to think of the totality of the “infected” primary structure even in its smallest interiors. As the designs sprawl–grow, infect—across Cobb’s building, Banfi proves that concrete, massive buildings and the spaces they model for us can be fundamentally altered by the slightest gesture.

The second show part of the show, Encontros, will open at the Boston Arts Academy’s Sandra and Philip Gordon Gallery (174 Ipswich Street, Boston) on October 4, and features Banfi’s collaboration with students of the Academy in her exploration of the inclusion of new materials, including soil and wood, into her work.

Recognized as one of the most promising young Brazilian artists, Chiara Banfi has become a significant voice in the contemporary art scene in São Paulo, her native city. Born in 1979, Banfi studied at the FAAP (Fundação Armando Álvarez Penteado). Shortly after graduation, she was awarded the prestigious Chamex prize from the Instituto Tomie Ohtake in 2004. Since then, she has exhibited in Berlin, Paris, Lyon, London, Middleburg (Holland), São Paulo, and Rio de Janeiro. This is Banfi’s first exhibition in Boston and in the United States.

In Lieu of Modernity
The Works of Alexander Apóstol

For all its concreteness, modernity has felt as fragile as imported chinaware in LatinAmerica. Irremediably foreign and incredibly costly to the societies it was meant to crucially transform, modernity, in our neck of the tropics, might still feel so detached from the norm and so impossibly delicate that it needs to be handled with the care only reserved for the luxury tea set kept just for guests.

It is precisely from the paradoxical condition in which modernity inhabits in Venezuela, through which the works of Alexander Apóstol acquire their powerful effect, as they continuously address and expose the limitations of the process of modernization in his native Caracas. By systematically preying on the grandiosity that accompanied the modernist architectural projects envisioned since the 1950s, Apóstol’s photographs and videos formally critique the process and sustainability of the accelerated modernization process in which the country embarked since.

The celebrated Residente Pulido and Residente Pulido: Ranchos series –displayed here across from each other, as the exhibition’s primordial line of tension—are perhaps the clearest examples of how Apóstol has pushed modernist architecture’s monumentality to the limit in order to show the fragility of the modernization process.

Each of the photographs of Residente Pulido presents a recognizable modernist building in the city with no windows or doors on their façades.

Apóstol carefully selected emblematic buildings across Caracas, which bear the names of some of the most luxurious chinaware of the time. But by intervening and transforming the image in such decisive ways–by “sealing” any entrance/exit into the structure, and by printing and presenting them in an oversize format—he effectively transformed these buildings into monuments, erasing their functionality and rendering them as useless and sumptuary as the expensive chinaware they are named after.

Thus, if the grandiose architectural projects were meant to transform Caracas from a small village on the periphery of the Western world into the hemisphere’s most modern polis during the middle part of the century, Apóstol’s photographs reveal not only the contradictory terms on which the endeavor was based but, most importantly, the subtle, fragile ways in which this village has survived and morphed until the present. These “monuments” of Caracas are the most evident sign that the city now stands as the ruins of a modernity which was never fully achieved.

A similar reading can also be sustained for the provocative videos such as Them as a Fountain, El Helicoide or Los Cuatro Jinetes in which, once more, the artist’s detailed focus on an architectural icon—a fountain, an emblematic commercial mall or a residential decorative stand by Gio Ponti, respectively—serves as the point of entrance to question the modernization process that has failed to occur completely but for which Venezuelans are already nostalgic.

This veiled, complicated relation with modernity that Venezuelans (and Latin Americans in general) experience should not come as a surprise. After all, and as Apóstol seems to suggest by his incessant quest for the character and gender of the iteration of modernity he happened to born into, when it comes to modernity in the tropics, the china is certainly very expensive, but the dish has yet to be served.

For over a decade, he has exhibited widely in Latin America, Europe and the United States in numerous major solo and group exhibitions in some of the most relevant venues, including: the Museo Nacional Reina Sofia (Madrid), the Sala Mendoza (Caracas), the Batiment d’Art Contemporain (Geneve), the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Sofía Imber (Caracas), the MUSAC (Castilla León), the Fundación Telefónica (Madrid), the Americas Society (New York City), the Biblioteca Luis Angel Arango (Bogotá), the Casa de América (Madrid), the Museo del Barrio (New Cork City), the Centro Galego de Arte Contemporáneo (Santiago de Compostela) and LACE (Los Angeles, CA).

He has participated as well in the São Paulo Biennal (2002), the Prague Biennal (2003 and 2005), Istanbul Biennal (2003), Printemps de Septembre (Toulouse) and the Cuenca Biennal (2004) where he was awarded the first prize of the jury.

His works are included in important collections around the world such as the Tate Modern (London), Daros‐Latinamerica (Zurich) and the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (Miami). His work has been featured in numerous publications and surveys of contemporary art –such as Vitamin PH (Phaidon, 2006), Art Photography Now (Thames an Hudson, 2005) and Blink (Phaidon 2004), and a number of essays on his work have appeared in leading art journals and magazines. This is his first show in Boston.
